Add Variety to Your Exercise Regime to see Improved Health and Fitness

As this New Year begins, millions of Americans will head back to the gym with renewed vigor to make 2011 the year they finally make progress on losing weight and getting healthier.
If you’ve been to the gym before but just haven’t seen the results you would like, it might be time to re-evaluate your current workout routine.
Most people go to the gym and have some semblance of a routine. Some lift weight while others adhere to the cardio machine. Before you go back to the gym this year, ask yourself what you really like to do and what you think you should be doing to get the results you desire.
Let’s face it the gym can be torture for some. The treadmill goes all day but never really takes you anywhere and lifting weights can be intimidating if you’re the weakest one in any setting.
For Improved Health and Fitness try adding something new to the routine.
1. Lifting weights is a great way to build muscle and burn fat. If you’re not lifting weights, you’re probably not seeing the results you want. Some gyms offer circuit training that incorporates light weights with cardio repeats.
2. If you run five days a week and still aren’t seeing results, try something different. Elliptical machines or bike riding burns calories and is significantly less stress producing than a treadmill.
3. Find a workout partner. Nothing improves the experience of going to the gym than going with someone you enjoy and who has like minded goals.
4. If you’re burnt out from the gym, try doing something outside. A three-mile run outdoors is so much more energy-giving than running on a treadmill. Try incorporating hill-training into running or biking to give yourself an extra burn.
Even if you’re not seeing the weight loss you desire, keep at it. No matter the circumstance exercise will improve your health.

Improve Your Diet and reduce Medical Problems

If you or a family member has been spending way too much time at the doctor’s office in 2010, the New Year is a great time to incorporate some changes into your diet that might be the key to staying healthy.
The eating habits your kids learn while they are under your tutelage, are the habits they will carry through their lifetime. If they drink a lot of soda when they are kids they are going to drink excessive soda when they are adults. One of the best things you can do to reduce obesity and other medical problems is to improve what you are drinking. When you take the soda away, the kids are going to scream, but improving eating habits is key to personal wellness.
Many of us have trouble during snack time. It’s really easy to grab a handful of chips or cookies but all you are really grabbing is empty calories that make you fat. There is no better substitute for snacks than fruits, nuts and berries. Find something your family enjoys or ‘tolerates’ during a transition period. Try combining nuts with some form of berry.
Many problem eating habits center around eating late at night. If you have a late-night refrigerator scavenger in the house, do whatever it takes to get them out of that habit.
It’s no secret that fresh vegetables and whole grains are better for you. Whole vegetables are filled with vitamins and minerals and help to reduce medical problems by keeping the body healthy. If someone doesn’t like vegetables, offer a substitute, but make certain your family is eating their veggies.
Add whole grain bread and pasta to the rotation to see improved results in health and fitness.
If you’re family is struggling with new eating habits, set a snack night where everyone can have one treat.
If changing your diet means less time at the doctor, it’s gotta be worth it.

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell a hot Topic in Politics

The United States Senate recently voted 65-31 to end Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, a military policy that allowed gays and lesbians to serve in the Armed Forces as long as they didn’t talk about or disclose their sexuality.
United States President Barack Obama promised gay and lesbian groups during his campaign that he would end the practice, and while it took several years, Obama came through on his promise. Obama and his administration came under pressure from gay rights groups to get the law passed before January when the Republican Party will take control of the house. The issue has been one of the hottest in politics in recent years.
So what happens now?
Advocates of the bill say that gay and lesbian service members will not be allowed to serve openly right away and could receive disciplinary action if they reveal their sexual orientation.
Three days after the passage by the Senate, Conservative Talk Show Host, Rush Limbaugh battered the Obama administration for their actions. Limbaugh suggested combat troops would not respond well in knowing they have gays or lesbians serving along-side ‘straight’ military members. Limbaugh also suggested there would be a certain amount of ‘predation’ among gay males in the military and suggested it was unfair for military families to be subjected to two men holding hands.
In the final analysis, who really cares?
Whether someone is gay or lesbian does not affect their ability to serve, and there is no more predation among gay society than there is straight.
The original 1993 law saw the removal of over 13-thousand military members dismissed for disclosing their sexuality. Over 10-thousand military members dismissed because they chose not to keep their sexuality closeted.
Really?
Limbaugh suggests the retraction of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell will force the Government to reinstitute a draft.
In 2011 most military members probably couldn’t care less if someone they are serving with is gay.

Teenage Drug and Alcohol Abuse Among the hot Medical Issues

If you think your teenagers aren’t being exposed to drugs and alcohol, think again, as statistics say otherwise. If your children are involved in drug and alcohol use, the best thing you can do is talk to them, be there for them, and hope they don’t have long-term medical issues because of their abuse.
National studies suggest that teenagers in the last 30 days used the following drugs at the following percentages.
• Alcohol 48%
• Marijuana 20%
• Stimulants 5”
• Steroids (almost 2%)
If you bump those numbers up to include usage in the last 12 months, you find the following.
• Alcohol 71 %
• Marijuana 34%
• Uppers 10%
• Steroids 3%
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that long-term exposure to drugs and alcohol will cause medical issues. If you don’t know what to look for in your teenagers, the following are a few signs you should be looking for.
• Lying about what they are doing.
• Increase or decrease in appetite.
• Change in appearance, bad body odor.
• Different circle of friends and erratic behavior.
• Withdrawal from the family and other normal activities or spending a lot of time in their room.
If you suspect your child is having problems with drugs or alcohol, it’s important to get to the root of the problem early to avoid long-term problems. Look through their room and look for things like rolling papers, lighters, pens that have the middle removed or glass mirrors that have any substance on them.
There is no better preventative medicine that talking to your kids about drugs and alcohol at an early age. It is also crucial for parents to set a good example. If you’re smoking pot in the house or drinking excessively, it would be pretty hard to tell your kids to stop and have them listen.

Don’t Forget to Have Fun With Health and Fitness

Millions of amateur athletes participate in high-school sports. As these athletes get older the number of participants dwindles in college and shrinks dramatically as the few and the proud move on to professional sports.
If you once had a love of sports, but just don’t have the time or don’t know where to find that same feeling it might be time to start looking into adult participation leagues across the country.
As we get older, we focus on work and families and often neglect the inner-us that made us the person we are today. If you were once a lover of playing sports and not just watching on television, it’s time to get off the couch and do something about it.
If you once loved softball or baseball, find a league that is near your home or get a work team together to play once per week.
If you loved football, find an adult flag-football league for people over 40.
Getting outside and enjoying something you do is a great alternative to trudging into the gym every day, completing the same boring routine, and not feeding that inner participation desire. For many, the increased exercise is a great way to improve health and fitness.
If you’re a busy guy or gal with family responsibilities, find something the whole family can enjoy. Bowling leagues are a great way to get out of the house and find something to do in a competitive environment. Some bowling alleys have enough lanes to accommodate league bowling-parents and their tag along children.
Competition is something that brings out the best in all of us. If you’re just not getting the same thrill from running your fasted 3-miles ever on the treadmill, it’s time to find the sports that once had you so invigorated.
As 2011 commences, get back in the saddle and find something you love to do.

Fitness And Health – Impossible To Achieve Without A Holistic Approach

It is possible to regain your lost health by simply popping a few antibiotics pills and hoping for the best. However, you cannot become fit by simply popping a few pills. Rather, you will have to focus on the following characteristics to ensure maximum benefits.

Discipline. It is impossible to become fit and stay that way unless and until you are disciplined. Irrespective of the nature of exercise you have chosen, you will have to stick to what you are doing and do it very regularly. You may not increase the intensity of the exercise and may wish to curtail the benefits you enjoy. However, you should never compromise on discipline and regularity.

Commitment. Where is the question of commitment if you want to stay fit? Well, you have the option of running at a specific speed for a specified duration to reduce your weight and become fit. You can run as slowly as possible for the entire duration and claim that you have done the work properly.

Or, you can exercise very hard and then come out and have a few chocolate chip cookies that destroy the benefits that you have gained. In such a scenario, you should have commitment to the larger goal.

Control over diet
If you do not control the inflow of energy into your body, you will never find it easy to stay fit. This is because improper diet will have a negative impact on your efforts to become fit as well. Sooner or later, you are going to end up with the numerous complications arising out of lack of fitness.

You can choose any form of exercise but make sure that you do whatever you are allotted in a serious and committed manner. Further, try to combine it with healthy eating habits for maximum benefits.

Potential Endemics – Important To React In A Mature And Sensible Manner

How seriously should you treat the risk of new endemic diseases spreading all over the world? Mankind has become very complaisant as far as endemic diseases are concerned. This is because improvement in medical technology made it possible to control diseases. Further, the growing coordination between various intergovernmental agencies provide confidence that mankind can handle any disease that spreads very quickly.

However, our analysis of this medical issue ignored one important aspect-the globalized nature of the world today. There was a time when diseases would spread when people would travel over long distances through ships. It was possible to cut transportation and prevent influx of foreigners to isolate the problem and cure it completely.

Today, a person who is suffering from an unknown disease may catch a flight and travel to any third world country and end up infecting a significant percentage of the population. The converse is also possible. This means that the elaborate setup that has been put in place to control these epidemics will be of no use because of the shear speed of the spread of the disease.

Does that mean that you should start stocking up on face masks and other such protective equipment? Well, such a defensive approach is never going to work. Rather, it is important to create awareness and enable people to react in a social and mature manner.

To simply focus on one’s family, friends and relatives and to let the rest of the world go to hell is not going to work. Such a selfish approach to a serious medical issue is going to complicate matters.

Further, knee jerk reaction is only going to cause a lot of loss in the event of a false alarm. Stopping the citizens of a country from traveling just because of a potential epidemic does not make sense.

Is Warming Up Important? More Than We Understand

Muscle canin
Image via Wikipedia

Why do people find it so difficult to carry out warm up exercises to its natural conclusion? Most of us make the following mistakes when it comes to warming up.

We do not understand its importance. We treat the exercise as some irregular hand and leg movements. This means that we reduce the task to a chore. Warm up happens to be a logical exercise regimen. Each and every part of the body is identified and its related muscles and tissues are also identified.

The next step involves focusing on those exercises that will increase blood flow to the relevant muscles and tissues. Why do you think you are asked to rotate your hand in clockwise and counterclockwise motion? Well, if you opt for such an approach, the blood is going to circulate up and down and this will facilitate proper warming up. This is going to reduce chances of damage to muscles due to lack of oxygen.

Hence, one should not treat the warm up as a perfunctory set of hand and leg movements.

The second mistake we commit is to try to cut short the duration of the exercise. Having a long warm up is never a bad thing. Most of us try to cut corners because we feel that the warm up provides no health benefit whatsoever. We simply conclude that it is the ‘real’ exercises that make the difference. Well, it is the combination of exercises done by a warmed up body that makes a huge difference.

Just make sure that you keep these points in mind when you feel the urge to skip the warm up. Skipping warm up is dangerous. Incomplete warm up is as dangerous as skipping it.

Do not relax during warm up by trying to save yourself for the real exercises. Warm up is the real exercise. Finally, do not make the mistake of resting or relaxing after warming up.

Stem Cell Research Debate Goes On

A recent federal court ruling stopped the government from funding research conducted on stem cells culled from human embryos. The effects of the judgement are not still not clear, and proponents of stem cell research say halting the research for even a few weeks would severely impede ongoing research.

Stem cells are cells that have the potential to grow into many different types of cells. and scientists think that they have the ability to cure many different types of conditions and diseases, from cancer to paralysis to Parkinson’s disease.

There is no ban on funding from state sources or from private donors, so most research centers are careful to designate which projects are federally funded and which are being funded from other sources.

The recent ban jeopardizes those scientists who were applying for grants from the National Institutes of Health, a federal agency. Researchers bemoan the fact that stopping these grants hampers moving discoveries into the marketplace where they can benefit patients. It is a long and expensive process to create therapies and drugs from research in the laboratory.

Researchers use stem cells from lines that already existed, and the embryos used were from embryos that were to be destroyed. Experts liken this to donations of organs.

Some scientists were hoping to use their research to begin the all-important clinical trials. With the ruling, these clinical trials will probably have to wait in the wings a bit longer because trials usually are funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Many celebrities endorse stem cell research, from those who are currently suffering from Parkinson’s disease to the families of those who have passed away from crippling diseases. Everyone wants to find cures for debilitating diseases, and the ban may not be enforced if scientists can convince the court that halting stem cell research would greatly harm America.

Appeal to Continue Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research is too important to the United States and medical research to have a ban. That was basically was the court declared when it lifted a moratorium halting stem cell research from embryos.

Experts denounced the ban, claiming that a ban on stem cell research could delay much needed cures and therapies for chronic conditions and debilitating diseases. .

Up to 22 projects using stem cells were due to receive federal money in September, and if they most likely would have been forced to stop if the ban had not been rescinded.

Stem cells are cells that can become more specialized cells in the body. Scientists can get stem cells from human embryos — the cause of so much controversy — or from adult tissue. Both of these types of stem cells have the potential to grow into a variety of different types of cells, including nerve cells, muscle cells and skin cells. Pretty exciting stuff to those waiting for cures.

Researchers like embryonic stem cells, which usually are derived from embryos used for in vitro fertilization. Usually many cells are created in a test tube, but only one is used. Those not used are available for research purposes.

Stem cells from adults are found in all types of tissue, including in blood, the liver and the skeleton muscles. They do not divide until activated by an injury or disease.

Reports suggest that the adult stem cells are less useful than those from embryos because they cannot become any type of cell, but can only grow into cells in the tissue from which they derived.

Research on stem cells is ongoing, and hopes remain high for eventual therapies and drugs that can be derived from them. It is an exciting time in medical research, so revel in the possibilities and potential!
