The Conservative Case Against Government Healthcare

American society is currently involved in a debate over the legality and social implications of a government-run national healthcare system. The debate over the proposed healthcare system is politics and usual in the US—liberals vs. conservatives. Although, in theory, the two sides should balance each other out, they don’t always do so. And the healthcare debate, over medical insurance in the US, is one of the cases where the fundamental beliefs of both sides are pitted against one another.
Some may argue that providing free healthcare to those who need it is a moral issue, but morality is seen differently on both sides of the isle. Although liberals see the healthcare bill as a way to help those in need. Conservatives see it as a way to take away power from the citizens and give it to the state.
It might be hard for some people to understand the conservative position: How is giving people healthcare taking away their power? Well, at the heart of the conservative politics is the belief that every citizen should be self-sufficient, take care of their own needs, and have the freedom to do what they believe is right. A perfect example of this political ideology is exemplified in the debate over 2nd amendment rights. Conservatives feel that if the government can decide who can and who cannot own guns that all citizens’ ability and right to protect themselves and their families can be taken away. Knowing that one can own and carry a gun to protect oneself and one’s property is extremely empowering and encourages one to be self-sufficient and take control of their lives in other areas.
Healthcare is the same way. According to conservative thinking, by providing healthcare to those who don’t have it, the government is taking away the power of some citizens to make decisions for themselves and take control of their own lives,
From this point of view, the healthcare debate is a moral issue. It is about empowering citizens to make choices for themselves, taking advantage of the freedom this county offers them, and becoming self-sufficient.

Politics, Numbers, and Medical Issues in the US

Unlike other western, industrialized countries, the US does not have a universal healthcare system. Granted it funds some programs, like Medicaid and Medicare as well as other, smaller programs initiated by individual states to cover children, but a complete healthcare coverage system does not exist in the US. However, when you look at the numbers, personal medical care costs and government spending on healthcare is gigantic, and Americans are still losing the fight to be healthy.
For instance, according to number of studies, the US ranks 50th in the world for life expectancy and has one of the highest infant mortality rates among modernized nations. In fact, according to a 2000 World Heath Organization study, the US was ranked 72nd (out of 191 countries) in overall healthcare quality for citizens. In the same study, it ranked first in responsiveness (i.e., citizens are able to get medical care very quickly), but it also ranked highest in cost.
High cost is another issue that plagues the American healthcare system. Although the government doesn’t directly pay for universal healthcare coverage, according to both the Montreal Economic Institute and the World Health Organization, the US government pays more per-citizen in healthcare costs than any other country—both industrialized and non-industrialized.
Personal healthcare costs in the US are also an issue. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2008, 15.3% of all Americans were completely uninsured. In addition, 35% were under-insured, meaning they do not have enough insurance to cover the medical costs for themselves or their families. As a result, it has been reported that in more than 62% of personal bankruptcies in the US, medical costs was a major factor.
What is, perhaps, even more distressing is that a lack of adequate healthcare in the US leads to about 18,000 unnecessary deaths each year—deaths that could have been avoided if citizens had access to healthcare coverage, according to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science.
If these numbers are right, healthcare in American is not just a political issue, but a moral and financial issue as well.

The Benefits of Mental Health with Physical Exercise

Many individuals have trouble coping, if even on a relatively small level, with some of the stresses in day to day life.  Certainly there are many obligations, such as one’s career and family, that can affect one’s mental and physical health.
Physical exercise allows one to stay physically fit, of course.  Cardiovascular exercise keeps one’s heart healthy and helps in many areas of the body’s overall health.  Strength training is also a valuable tool for maintaining a strong and health body.
Mental health, however, is often contrasted with one’s physical health.  Yet even as these are two different areas in everyone’s life, they become intersected with the presence of physical exercise.
One of the most powerful mental effects of physical exercise is releasing stress.  Research and practice have demonstrated the powerful ability for physical exercise to have on one’s stresses.  Surely most have experienced how a good workout of any kind can "make the worries go away," to paraphrase a common maxim.
Physical exercise also improves some of the body’s abilities to copy with day to day life.  Fatigue is one primary example of this.  As physical exercise allows one’s body to feel refreshed and ready for a new day, it is not hard to connect the presence of physical exercise to mental wellness in this example.
Along these lines, some of the powerful effects of physical exercise can be seen.  It can be something as seemingly indirect as physical exercise improving one’s ability to sleep, which improves mental health by way of fatigue and thus stress.  Or, it can be quite direct, such as one using a heavy bag to directly release direct mental stress.
For many people, staying consistent with physical exercise is one stable way to keep one’s mental health at high levels.  Feeling refreshed and having a source to release stresses and worries, realizing the benefits for one’s mental health with physical exercise can be obtained quite easily.

According to a study by the American Psychological Association (APA), over 43 percent of American adults suffer negatively from stress. Stress surrounds everyone in our society. It’s also estimated that over 70 percent of visits to the doctor are caused by stress according to the American Stress Institute.
So, how do we know when stress is impacting us and how can we control it? In our society, stress is generally psychological and physically caused. In our modern world, stress is no longer triggered by individuals being chased by large predators. But this seems to make the stress worse, because it’s more constant and pervasive. People feel stressed out at home, at school, and especially at work. This means there’s no downtown from the stress.
When a human body feels stress, it automatically responds to protect itself. Heart rates increase and so does blood pressure.  Blood sugar levels increase, and the body sends more blood to the arms and legs, away from the digestive system. The human body goes into overload protection mode when it experiences stress, like a huge animal is going to leap on top of you. It can’t be good to live in this mode perpetually.
The ability to de-stress is not only important it’s crucial to health and survival. As soon as stress hits, take some deep breaths and chill out. Regular exercise is another way to control stress. It helps mood and increases endorphins which boost the immune system. Get enough sleep. You will feel more stressed when you are tired. Of course, maintaining good nutrition is also helpful in controlling stress. Another great stress controller is maintaining a strong network of supportive friends. Being around other positive upbeat people can help us also stay that way. Don’t forget good old laughter. It’s the best medicine and also great for lowering stress levels.

Happy Family Societies

The dictionary describes a family as social group with usually one or two parents and children. They share goals, values, have long-term commitment for each other, and generally reside in the same dwelling place.  Many consider families to be a basic building block of our society and also a society within themselves. This is why unhappy/dysfunctional families are one of a society’s greatest ills. Studies show that children growing up in unhappy family situations often suffer long-term negative physical conditions including earlier death rates, anxiety disorders, heart disease, and cancer. Teens are especially impacted by their family society when it’s negative. They often develop sleeping problems, eating disorders, depression, and other mental problems.1
With all the negative impacts facing family life into our world, it’s important to realize that happy families exist, and they often have certain qualities in common. Every family is unique, but these are traits that help families to be happy and functional.
Happy families are committed to each other. They put family and each other first. They help each individual be the best they can be. They work together, not perfectly, but they are always trying to do their best. Many happy families share a common faith and religion. Sharing their faith together and worshiping together, helps a family build a strong bond with each other. It also helps them spend time together. This is another integral part in happy functional families.  Spending time together can have an even higher value when a family is working together and rendering service to each other or others.
All these qualities also contain the important aspect of open and positive communication. A happy family society is one where members feel loved and accepted.  This doesn’t mean everything is always perfect and there are never problems or conflict. It means that everyone is working together and bonded together in the good times and bad times, because they’re a family.
