Medical Problems at Work

What are you supposed to do when you are sick — or another member of your family who can’t stay home while you trot off to work — is sick? What happens if you continually call in sick to your employer and put your boss and coworkers in a bind?

Can you be fired — or can your boss call you in and say that one more sick day is grounds for dismissal? Depending on what your medical issue is, there are avenues you can take to ensure you don’t lose your job.

If you incur a condition that makes you disabled, your employer must provide you with the means to keep performing your job, whether that is as simple as an ergonomically correct chair if you sit at the computer all day, or a braille computer if you have severe vision loss. You must research your condition to determine if it is considered a disability by the government, and then go from there. Most employers want to accommodate disabilities, especially if you have been
working for them for a while before the disability occurs.

If your condition is a temporary one from which you will recover, then you should look into taking a leave. In some states, an employee can be out of the office for a year. If you qualify for this type of leave, then you cannot be fired while you are gone, although a temporary replacement may be hired to do your job while you cannot.

Another avenue to explore is the Family and Medical Leave Act, which permits employees to take a leave of up to 12 weeks for medical reasons. This covers family members, as well as yourself.
